Really not a book for the layman.

I got this one, because I had been looking for a professional breakdown of Old English. I had read up on it on the net but actually wanted a formal analysis. I wasn’t too disappointed by this one, in that it went into a little more depth than the other offerings I’d seen.

Nonetheless, I wouldn’t particularly recommend it for people who are interested in the progression of the English language from 500 to the present day, because David Crystal’s ‘The Stories of English‘ batters it for better coverage, although it’s three times as lengthy.
